Frequently Asked Questions

General information about marrying in Denmark as an international couple. Your own case is answered individually in the free assessment.

general

Do we need to live in Denmark?

No. There is no Danish residency requirement to marry in Denmark. You do need a legal basis for entering and staying in Denmark or the Schengen area around your ceremony, and your documentation still has to meet the requirements set by the authorities.

Can non-EU citizens marry in Denmark?

Non-EU and non-EEA citizens can marry in Denmark, but the documentation requirements are usually more detailed and your legal basis for entry or stay is assessed. Each case is reviewed individually.

What documents will we need?

This depends on your nationalities, countries of residence and marital history. Typically passports, proof of legal stay where relevant, and civil status or divorce documentation. We prepare an individual checklist after your case assessment.

How long does the application process take?

Processing times are set by The Danish Agency of Family Law and can change depending on case volume and the completeness of your documentation. We cannot commit to a processing time on the authority's behalf.

Can approval be guaranteed?

No. Approval is decided by The Danish Agency of Family Law. We assess your situation, explain the requirements and prepare your application carefully, but the decision is not ours to make.

Can a specific ceremony date be guaranteed?

No. Ceremony dates depend on municipality availability and on your approval being in place. We coordinate towards your preferred date, but availability is controlled by the municipality.

How long is the Certificate of Marital Status valid?

The certificate issued on approval has a limited validity period, and your ceremony must take place within it. The exact period is stated on your own certificate.

What happens if one of us was married before?

You will normally need final documentation of how the previous marriage ended, such as a final divorce decree or a death certificate, and it may need legalisation or an apostille. We review what is needed in your case.

Do we need witnesses?

Yes, a civil ceremony in Denmark requires witnesses. Some municipalities can assist and some cannot, so we clarify this as part of ceremony coordination.

Is the Danish marriage certificate recognised abroad?

Danish marriage certificates are widely recognised internationally, but recognition in any specific country is decided by that country's authorities. We can advise on the usual legalisation steps.

Do we need an apostille?

It depends on where your documents were issued and where you intend to use your Danish marriage certificate. We give guidance on apostille and legalisation as part of our services.

Can same-sex couples marry in Denmark?

Yes. Denmark has full marriage equality, and same-sex couples marry under the same rules as everyone else.

Can you help if we already have approval?

Yes. If you already hold a valid Certificate of Marital Status, we can help you coordinate an available ceremony and prepare the practical details.

These answers are general information, not legal advice, and not a decision on your case. Requirements, fees and processing times are set by the Danish authorities and may change.
