Getting Legally Married in Copenhagen Before or After a Cruise

Planning a legal marriage around a cruise that starts, ends or calls in Copenhagen? Why before or after the cruise is the more workable model, and what a port-day wedding would need.

By Scandinavian Wedding · Reviewed

Short answer: if your cruise starts or ends in Copenhagen, marrying in the days before you embark or after you disembark is the most workable plan. The legal process happens on land, through a Danish municipality, with approval obtained before you travel. A wedding during a port call is only realistic when the approval, a confirmed municipal slot, document presentation, transfers and a generous all-aboard buffer are all genuinely in place. This guide is educational; we review individual requests, we do not sell a cruise wedding package.

Why before or after the cruise works better

  • You have whole days in Copenhagen, not a few hours.
  • You reduce dependence on one short transit call, although ship delays and itinerary changes can still affect any trip.
  • Verify that you can present the required identification. If the operator holds documents, confirm its release and return procedures in advance.
  • Plan around a confirmed ceremony date and time, not office opening hours. Copenhagen City Hall also offers Saturday ceremonies; the wedding office being closed does not mean ceremonies are closed.

This guide focuses on international couples applying through the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset/FRH). Nationalities and the basis of each partner's residence determine whether FRH or a municipality handles the application; living outside Denmark alone does not decide jurisdiction. Check the official international-marriages overview for the relevant municipality routes, including Danish/Nordic cases and qualifying residence in Denmark. See the jurisdiction explanation and conditional checklist in the documents guide. Valid approval must be in place before the ceremony. Four months is the normal maximum certificate validity, but passport, visa or residence-permit expiry can shorten it; check the actual printed expiry.

A Danish civil marriage requires an authorised marriage officiant: a captain's title alone is not that authorisation. A symbolic vow renewal is not a legal marriage. Some cruise lines may arrange actual legal marriages under another jurisdiction; ask the operator which arrangement is offered and distinguish it from symbolic vows and a Danish civil ceremony.

Non-EU/EEA partners must document legal stay in Schengen. For entry/exit after 10 April 2026, the official guidance distinguishes visa-required citizens (visa sticker plus both EES data and result pages and applicable plane tickets/boarding passes) from visa-exempt citizens (both EES pages and applicable travel evidence, no visa sticker). Intended entry follows a separate route; consult the official legal-stay guidance. Cruise passengers do not all arrive by plane, and the evidence for maritime travel needs confirmation from the authority for your case. We will not assume it.

What a port-day wedding would need

RequirementWhy it matters
Approval issued before the cruiseApplications cannot be completed on the day
A confirmed municipal slot on the port dayCopenhagen notes waits of up to four months at busy times
Passports and documents in handSome ships hold passports; plan how you will present ID
Confirmed ceremony date and timeCheck the actual appointment; Copenhagen City Hall includes Saturday ceremonies
Terminal transfer both waysTraffic and security checks take time
A large all-aboard bufferMeet the operator's all-aboard time; never assume late boarding will be allowed

At Copenhagen City Hall the ceremony itself takes about 10 minutes, you should arrive 10–15 minutes early, ceremonies are held in Danish, English or German and the municipality provides the witnesses. A private registrar ceremony elsewhere in the municipality is different: it can be requested only after approval, and you bring two witnesses.

Language, witnesses and guests

City Hall ceremonies in Copenhagen are held in Danish, English or German, and the municipality provides the witnesses. If you prefer a private location within the municipality through a registrar, plan for your own two witnesses. If guests are travelling on the same cruise, remember that their schedule is tied to the ship as well.

What to send us for a review

  1. Ship, sailing date and whether Copenhagen is embarkation, disembarkation or a transit call.
  2. Arrival and all-aboard times for any port day.
  3. Both partners' nationalities, residence and legal-stay situation.
  4. Whether either partner has been married before.
  5. When you need to be back home, and where you will use the certificate.

What cannot be guaranteed

We cannot guarantee approval, a slot on a particular day, a ship's schedule or delivery of the certificate before you sail. We provide an independent local service; the cruise is booked separately. This page makes no current authorised cruise-line partnership claim and offers no packaged port-day inventory.

Next step

Send your itinerary and situation through the free case assessment enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether a pre-cruise, post-cruise or port-day plan looks workable.
