EXPATS AND COUPLES LIVING APART
Marrying in Denmark as Expats or Long-Distance Partners
Denmark is often chosen by couples whose lives span more than one country: an expat posting, a work permit in a third country, or two partners who have not yet lived in the same place.
Your circumstances determine the checklist
Living abroad does not automatically require a civil-status certificate or registry record from your nationality or residence country. Nationalities, basis of residence, marriage history and other circumstances determine the authority route and supporting documents.
If a particular record is required, we check its issuing authority and validity period before you request it. There is no single document checklist for all expat couples.
Typical expat situations we handle
- One partner on a work permit in the Gulf, Asia or the Americas
- Partners who currently live in two different countries
- Dual nationals deciding which citizenship to apply under
- Couples who cannot easily obtain documents from their country of origin
- Couples with limited shared travel windows
Planning around travel
Both partners must be in Denmark for the ceremony, and both must have a legal basis for entry. We plan the case around the travel window you actually have rather than an ideal one, and we tell you where availability is outside anyone's control.
Authority route and official requirements
These pages focus on international applications through the Agency of Family Law. Nationalities and basis of residence determine whether that Agency or a municipality examines your application; relevant Danish and Nordic cases can follow a municipality route. Check the official international-marriages and documentation guidance for your circumstances.
