NON-EU AND NON-EEA CITIZENS
Marrying in Denmark as a Non-EU Citizen
Non-EU and non-EEA citizens can marry in Denmark. The requirements are more detailed, because the authorities assess both your civil documentation and your legal basis for being in Denmark or the Schengen area around the ceremony.
Legal stay is assessed, not assumed
For third-country nationals the application asks how each partner is lawfully present. That may be a residence permit in an EU country, a Schengen visa, visa-free entry within a permitted period, or another basis.
The relevant dates matter as much as the category. A permit that expires shortly after your preferred ceremony date can change what is realistic, and we would rather tell you that at the assessment stage than after you have booked flights.
Documentation that commonly applies
- Passports for both partners, valid well beyond the intended ceremony date
- Proof of legal stay: residence permit, visa or documented visa-free entry
- Civil status documentation from the country of citizenship or residence
- Final divorce decrees or death certificates, often with apostille or legalisation
- Certified translations where documents are not issued in an accepted language
Common reasons non-EU cases take longer
Documents issued outside the EU frequently need an apostille or consular legalisation, and that process happens in the issuing country on its own timetable. Requests from the authorities for clarification or an interview also extend the case.
None of this makes a case impossible. It does mean that the sequence of steps should be planned before anything is submitted.
What we do not promise
Approval is decided by The Danish Agency of Family Law, and no service can guarantee it. We assess your situation honestly, prepare a complete application and keep you informed. If we believe a case is unlikely to succeed as presented, we say so.
