US CITIZENS
Marrying in Denmark as US Citizens
American couples marry in Denmark for the same reasons other international couples do: a clear civil procedure, English-language communication and municipalities experienced with visitors.
Documentation for US citizens
US passports are straightforward. Civil status documentation is less uniform, because marriage and divorce records are held at state or county level rather than nationally, and the format varies considerably.
Where a previous marriage ended, a certified copy of the final divorce decree from the issuing court is normally required, and it may need an apostille from the relevant Secretary of State.
Using your Danish marriage certificate in the US
Danish marriage certificates are widely accepted internationally, but each US state, federal agency or employer decides what it needs. Many require an apostille on the Danish certificate.
We explain the usual legalisation route for the state or agency you intend to use it with. We do not advise on US immigration matters.
Practical points for travelling from the US
- US citizens normally enter Denmark visa-free for short stays, subject to current rules
- Both partners must be present in Denmark for the ceremony
- Ceremony dates depend on municipality availability, not on your travel dates
- Witnesses are required; arrangements differ between municipalities
