US MILITARY PERSONNEL
Marrying in Denmark as US Military Personnel
Service members stationed in Europe often marry in Denmark because the civil procedure is documented, conducted in English on request and reachable within a short leave window.
Working with a leave window
Military schedules rarely allow flexibility, so we plan backwards from the window you have. That means starting the documentation early and being explicit about what is outside our control: the authority's processing time and the municipality's ceremony calendar.
We will not tell you a date is secured before a municipality has confirmed it.
Documentation notes
- A valid passport is normally required; identification cards alone are usually not sufficient
- Proof of legal stay based on your status in the country where you are stationed
- Final divorce or death documentation where relevant; any authentication or translation is document- and country-dependent, including the typical US authentication exemption
- Additional documentation your command or personnel office may require separately
After the ceremony
Recognition for pay, housing, dependant status, benefits or immigration is decided by your service or receiving agency. Ask it what evidence is needed; optional apostille handling does not guarantee acceptance.
Authority route and official requirements
These pages focus on international applications through the Agency of Family Law. Nationalities and basis of residence determine whether that Agency or a municipality examines your application; relevant Danish and Nordic cases can follow a municipality route. Check the official international-marriages and documentation guidance for your circumstances.
