PREVIOUSLY MARRIED PARTNERS

Marrying in Denmark After a Divorce or Bereavement

If either partner has been married before, the authorities need clear evidence of how that marriage ended. This is the single most common reason an otherwise straightforward case is delayed.

Final means final

An interim ruling, a separation agreement or a case reference number is generally not enough. What is required is documentation that the previous marriage has definitively ended: a final divorce decree, a court judgment marked final, or a death certificate.

Where a divorce took place in one country and was registered in another, both records may be relevant.

Legalisation and translation

  • Documents issued abroad often need an apostille or consular legalisation
  • Translation into an accepted language may be required
  • Some countries issue documents with a limited validity period
  • Copies are frequently not accepted where a certified original is expected

If documents are missing

Records lost to time, relocation or a change of jurisdiction are common. There is sometimes an alternative route through the issuing authority, and sometimes there is not. We assess this before you commit to a service rather than after.
