Already Approved? Changing Your Wedding Date or Municipality in Denmark
If you hold a valid Certificate of Marital Status, moving your date and moving your municipality are different steps. Here is how each works and what to watch.
By Scandinavian Wedding · Reviewed
Short answer: if your Certificate of Marital Status is still valid and still applies to your situation, you usually do not need a new application or a new government application fee just to marry on a different date or in a different place. Changing the date is a booking matter with the municipality. Changing the place means letting the authority know so the approval can be used where you will marry. Neither step comes with a guaranteed new date.
First check: is your approval still valid?
Four months is the normal maximum validity, but passport, visa or residence-permit expiry can make it shorter. Check the actual printed expiry, not just the issue date. If your new date falls after expiry, you must reapply and pay the FRH application fee again. Moving the date never extends validity.
The approval also assumes your circumstances are as you described. If something has changed, for example a partner's marital status or residence, tell us; it may need a new assessment.
Changing the date in the same municipality
This is usually a request to the municipality that holds your booking. Ask it for available dates before you cancel your current slot, because a cancelled slot may not be offered again. Popular municipalities can have long waits; Copenhagen's guidance mentions waits of up to four months at busy times.
Changing to a different municipality
The authority's information sheet says you should let it know if you change where you will marry. In practice:
- Find a municipality that can offer a date within your certificate's validity.
- Inform the authority of the change and follow its instructions for the approval.
- Confirm the booking with the new municipality only when it confirms the date in writing.
- Keep the original certificate and booking confirmations together.
We do not promise an instant transfer. How quickly the paperwork moves depends on the authority and the municipalities.
Decision table
| Situation | Usual action | New government application fee? |
|---|---|---|
| Valid certificate, new date, same town | Rebook with the municipality | Usually no, while unchanged, valid and applicable |
| Valid certificate, different town | Inform the authority, then book the new town | Usually no, while unchanged, valid and applicable |
| Certificate will expire before new date | New application | Yes |
| Circumstances changed since approval | Individual review | Depends |
Separate municipal charges or additional coordination costs may apply even when no new government application fee is needed. Check the municipality's terms and your written service quote.
Common mistakes when moving a date
- Cancelling the existing booking before a new date is confirmed.
- Choosing a new date after the certificate's expiry and only noticing later.
- Changing municipality without informing the authority.
- Booking flights for the new date before the municipality confirms it.
- Assuming the new municipality has the same ceremony rules, witnesses or languages as the old one. Check each municipality's own guidance.
Keep a simple record of the certificate's issue date, the last valid day, and every confirmation you receive. It makes each step easier to check.
How we help
Our Already Approved assistance looks at your certificate, finds available ceremony options that fit inside its validity and coordinates the change. The price is confirmed after we have reviewed your approval; see the Already Approved page.
What cannot be guaranteed
No date, municipality or transfer timing is guaranteed. Availability and acceptance are decided by the authority and the municipalities.
Next step
Tell us your certificate's issue date and actual printed expiry, your current booking and the dates you are hoping for through the enquiry form, and mention that you are already approved.
